ANDhe Peruvian Congress rejected this Thursday the admission of two vacancy motions against the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, following the scandal over the Rolex luxury watches case, which has led to the opening of a preliminary investigation by the National Prosecutor's Office.
In a first vote, the plenary session rejected the motion presented by the Perú Libre party, the political group with which Boluarte came to the Executive in 2021 as vice president of the dismissed former head of State Pedro Castillo, for 49 votes against and the abstention of 15 legislators.
Next, the progressive parliamentarian Sigrid Bazán supported the second motion for vacancy (dismissal) by the Together for Peru party and other benches, and recalled “repression and murders in response to the protests” of 2022-2023as well as his refusal to call early elections, after Castillo's dismissal.
Bazán added to these issues the recent preliminary investigation against Boluarte for alleged illicit enrichment and failure to declare assets, based on journalistic complaints published in recent weeks.
The de facto Congress-Executive pact to remain in power is ratified. Yesterday with the vote of confidence, today with the shielding of Dina Boluarte. However, the plenary session rejected the second motion because 59 votes against, 11 abstentions, and 32 votes in favor.
Precisely, this Thursday the governor of Ayacucho, Wilfredo Oscorima, goes to the Prosecutor's Office to clarify whether he was one of the people who gave Boluarte one of the Rolex watches that he has worn in official ceremonies and that is estimated to be valued at more than 15,000 dollars.
Oscorima acknowledged to the press that he acquired a watch with the same characteristics in Lima, but that he gave it to a relative.
However, an investigation by Canal Latina revealed on Wednesday that Oscorima bought the item on the same day as Boluarte's last birthday and that, hours later, he went to the headquarters of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
The region led by Oscorima received last March a transfer from the Executive of 100 million soles (27 million dollars) to build a stadium in its jurisdiction, with a view to the 2025 Bolivarian Games, according to an emergency decree published in the official newspaper El Peruano.
Boluarte will have to respond to the prosecutor's interrogation this Fridayafter he requested the rescheduling of the procedure and the Public Ministry carried out a search of his home and the Government Palace last weekend.
