Milan-Stadio, Fortune: Cardinale has found his nemesis, the Italian bureaucracy
“The American sports tycoon who wants to build the Yankee Stadium in Milan may have found his nemesis: the Italian bureaucracy”, writes the Fortune website describing Gerry Cardinale's projects linked to the new stadium of the Milan club. The article talks about how Mr. RedBird's idea is that of a new 70,00-seat Rossoneri home that has “an entertainment district, a team museum, hotels, a theme park and changing rooms with cryogenic pools”. A 1 billion dollar project in San Donato that could replace “the beloved but ramshackle San Siro”.
Milan, Gerry Cardinale on the Rossoneri stadium: Milan and Italy must do what the New York Yankees did in 2008
On the new Milan stadium, Gerry Cardinale explained “It's time for Italy and Milan to do what the Yankees did in 2008 (new stadium, demolishing the historic old one, ed.). The old Yankee Stadium had been there forever. There was Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. He was an icon. But they realized that it was time for a new version. I have heard from past experiences of others that it is very difficult. However, I like our chances.”
Milan, Cardinale: 'Without the new stadium it will be difficult to compete in Europe. Market? We need to spend better, not more'
On the purchase of land in San Donato Milanese, in the San Francesco area: “I wanted to be sure to have a viable and narrow option for the stadium. If it wasn't built, Milan would have an uphill battle to compete in Europe. But I'll be busy with Milan in any case. If the stadium isn't built, we will stay at San Siro.”
On other club owners who want to build stadiums in Italy: “I hope Dan Friedkin manages to build a stadium. I will definitely do everything I can to support him, because Italy needs more infrastructure for live entertainment. If I had the choice, I would help all the other owners of Serie A to build a stadium, because it is good for the ecosystem”
Gerry Cardinale explained his management philosophy at Milan, with an eye also on the transfer market: “It's not about exceeding each other's spending. It's about spending an incremental dollar of capital better than anyone else. PSG and City ? You will never be able to overcome that expense…”.
