For some years now, many independent games that promise to be quality products have had deals with Xbox and the Game Pass, Well, several of them have come out on day one for the platform, with an alliance so that they have the opportunity to have more exposure. However, it seems that new regulations have arrived, since those times in which agreements were reached, at least with independent creators, will be ending both in Microsoft like in Epic Games.
In an interview at Game Developers Conference from last week in San Francisco, the developers behind great indies Slay the Spire and Darkest Dungeon They said the arrangement that some small developers have come to rely on for financing in recent years, such as exclusives from Epic Game Store and Xbox Game Passes They are no longer what they were. It boiled down to cuts, canceled funding, conversations that lasted a year, everything has been cancelled.
Here what is mentioned by Casey Yanoco-founder of the studioo Mega Crit:
I talked to at least five small teams, like 35 members or less, during GDC, and they said: Cuts, cuts, cuts, funding canceled, conversations that lasted a year, canceled. It looks like shit. We are definitely very privileged to be able to finance ourselves. Otherwise I would be very, very, very scared right now.
They have also cited Epic Games:
Also Epic. The gold rush is over. I come from the Northwest Territories. The city where I'm from was built on gold, and then they found diamonds further north. Perhaps another paradigm shift is in store for us, but I definitely think the scale of the deals I've heard about are significantly smaller than those of the big swing days. We certainly got our deal with Epic at the right time.
With that in mind, we may no longer see the likes of cuphead, with good ideas that cannot be financed because the developers are not large companies. Let us remember that many projects have taken shape due to monetary impulse, but in exchange they must be preserved as a temporary exclusive.

Editor's note: It's pretty sad that great ideas are no longer going to be conceptualized, unless you have enough money to get them out there and eventually to the players. It seems that companies like Microsoft no longer feel like supporting independents.
