Beniamino Zuncheddu has elapsed 33 years in prison as an innocent man for a triple murder he never committed, due to a trial based on false testimony, but now the State has awarded him compensation of 30 thousand euros.
The figure was established by the Surveillance Court of Cagliari which today awarded the former breeder, acquitted and released last January at the end of the review process held in Rome, compensation, as requested since 2016 by his lawyer Mauro Trogu , for spending over ten years detained in small, overcrowded cells.
In January 1991 Zuncheddu was accused and then sentenced to life imprisonment for the triple murder of three shepherds in a case which, as Sardinia's Prison Guarantor Irene Testa explained to TPI, “could have happened to anyone”.
“The disconcerting fact is that with this provision it is recognized that Beniamino was for 10 years in cells with approximately two square meters available, with the bathroom not separated by doors and without hot water, with cellmates who slept on the floor”, has explained today at the news agency Adnkronos the lawyer Mauro Trogu.
Obviously it won't end here. As for the further compensation provided for 33 years of unjust imprisonment, Zuncheddu's lawyer will wait for the reasons for the acquittal sentence to be filed before forwarding the request.
