Spain and Romania will be the rivals of the Colombian National Team in the first two games of Argentine Néstor Lorenzo's team in 2024. It should be remembered that in the first five months of the year there will be no official competition.
The great challenges for the National Team this year are the Copa América, which will be played from June 20 in the United States, and three double rounds of the tie, in the second half.
The game against Spain will be in London, on March 22, starting at 3:30 in the afternoon. Four days later they will face Romania at the Civitas Metropolitano stadium in Madrid, at 2:30 pm
It will be the fourth time that Colombia faces Spain in senior team matches. The first duel was played on July 2, 1981, at the El Campín stadium. The game ended 1-1.
The current coach of Once Caldas, Hernán Darío Herrera, put the local team ahead in the 76th minute. Alexanco tied the game. That Spanish team was preparing to be home in the World Cup the following year. Colombia, led by Argentine Carlos Salvador Bilardo, did not qualify.
Almost 30 years later, Colombia faced Spain again, which at that time was the world champion. The game was played at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, on February 9, 2011. Spain won 1-0, with a goal from David Silva, in the 85th minute. The coach of Colombia was Hernán Darío Gómez.
The most recent confrontation was on June 7, 2017, in Murcia. Again, it ended in a tie, 2-2. David Silva repeated as scorer for Spain: he opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Colombia turned the game around with goals from Edwin Cardona, at 40, and Radamel Falcao García, at 55. Álvaro Morata scored the final tying goal, at 87.
Romania: a headache for Colombia
For the fourth time, the Colombian and Romanian teams will meet on a field. The first two games bring back painful memories for the South American side.
The first confrontation was in the debut of both teams in the 1994 World Cup in the United States, in Pasadena, California. Colombia arrived, according to international voices, as the favorite for the title. It was the beginning of the end. On June 28, the Romanians won 3-1, with a double from Florin Raducioiu and a goal from Gheorghes Hagi. Adolfo Valencia discounted.
The draw for the 1998 World Cup in France paired Colombians and Romanians in the same group and the schedule put them face to face again in the first match. At the Gerland stadium in Lyon, on June 15 of that year, Romania won again: 1-0, with a goal from Adrian Ilie.
On May 27, 2006, the only friendly match, so far, between Colombia and Romania was played at the Soldier Field stadium in Chicago (USA). The two teams had just been eliminated from the World Cup in Germany. The match ended 0-0.
