Bridgestone announces the largest investment ever made by the company in Europe: the company has in fact put 207 million euros on the table for the Burgos production plant in Spain, an economic effort that will allow the brand specialized in the production of tires to accelerate in achieving its sustainability goals, such as zero emissions by 2050.
Bridgestone's commitment
This ambitious project includes technological innovation plans that will be implemented between now and 2030, and reflects Bridgestone's commitment to the production of premium and High Rim Diameter (HRD, 18″ and up) tyres, with a significant increase in productivity of approximately 20% compared to the current one. This increase in production capacity will help Bridgestone Europe meet customer demand for premium and high-tech tyres. The new technological transformation will focus on three pillars: automation for greater productivity, increased vulcanization capacity and the creation of an automatic vertical warehouse to increase stocks of freshly produced tires, all elements that will guarantee greater flexibility in production processes.
Sustainability in Burgos
The Burgos manufacturing facility has one of Bridgestone's largest passenger car tire production capacities globally and will increase HRD tire production capacity by 75% to over 7 million units. Furthermore, this transformation will make the Burgos plant one of Bridgestone's largest producers of van tires in Europe. Here the company has already embarked on a sustainability path for some time with more than 20,000 solar panels recently installed on the roof of the factory which cover an area equivalent to five football fields and a total power of 9.2 MW. Thanks to this installation, between 10% and 14% of the electricity consumed by the factory is directly supplied by the sun. On the sunniest days, the factory's energy needs during peak hours are entirely covered by renewable energy. With the €207 million investment, Bridgestone aims to offer a mix of technology, automation and R&D that will help significantly reduce losses and improve production processes. Thanks to this modernization, it is estimated that the Burgos plant will save 410 tonnes of CO2 per year compared to current levels, which translates into approximately 2,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
