BYD is preparing to unveil a very promising new plug-in hybrid system. A fifth generation powertrain that combines electric with petrol, and which aims to overcome the barrier of 2,000 kilometers of overall autonomy: its debut should take place next month at the Beijing Auto Show in China, and will be accompanied by another debut, that of a fourth generation EV platform.
Continuous evolution
Returning to the plug-in hybrid system, according to what Autocar reports it will be an evolution of the Dual Mode system, more conveniently known as DM, used across the current BYD range. 16 years have passed since this system made its first official appearance, it was 2008, and since then it has always been constantly updated through a series of technological updates. Now a new evolution is ready.
The system today
This system, today, comes in two versions: one more oriented on efficiencyand one that focuses predominantly on performance. In both cases, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with Atkinson cycle and a synchronous electric motor are combined, as well as a CVT gearbox: the battery can be selected with a capacity of 8.32 kWh or alternatively 18.32 kWh, for a maximum overall autonomy which in the Chinese CLTC cycle reaches 1,200 kilometers (up to 60 liters of tank capacity).
First rumors
As for the next generation of this system, its concrete debut on BYD series cars is expected over the course of next year: the official specifications have yet to be made known, but according to the latest rumors the maximum overall range, depending on the model, can reach 2,000 kilometres. As mentioned, the platform will also be new: it should be one More advanced ePlatform 4.0which will also be used by the next generation of BYD electric vehicles.
