Strictly speaking, its legitimate functions are: to defend the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation; guarantee internal security; assist the civilian population in cases of public needs; carry out civic actions and social works that tend to progress the country and, in the event of a disaster, provide help for the maintenance of order, assistance to people and their property, and the reconstruction of affected areas.
AMLO understands them like this:
“Protect our sovereignty; guarantee internal security; support in everything that has to do with social development (…). The fourth is the one we have supported the most: the construction of works that have to do with the development of Mexico. And in the six-year period of turbidity camouflaged as “national security” they were allowed to manage airline businesses, hotels, tourist developments and even the leasing of commercial premises, turning them into virtual Armed Forces, SA, which entails the very high risk of corruption.
Starting in June 2022, the Sedena presides over a consortium of three corporations to operate the emblematic works of López Obrador and is authorized to collect dividends.
These companies manage, for example, the Olmeca-Maya-Mexica Airport, Railway and Auxiliary Services Group, Tren Maya, as well as the Palenque airports and the Tulum International Airport.
Those in the know say that if the Army were a natural person, it would be the third richest businessman in Mexico after Carlos Slim and Germán Larrea (in the middle of last year it was estimated at 15 billion dollars, which may already be 20 thousand).
