It is not usual that the richest man in Mexico accept talkof all topics, in front of journalists.
It is also not common that one of the wealthiest businessmen in the world I spent almost 4 hours on reply every kind of questions formulated by dozens of journalists that they had never imagined being able to interrogate him.
The truth is that, if we analyze each of the responses of Carlos Slimin its recent press conferenceit is easy to come to the conclusion that the most powerful businessman in Mexico actually intended a public demarcation, from the López Obrador government.
Yes, a specific review of what Slim expressed leads us to the hypothesis that the businessman is not committed to the continuity of López's project, since one of the most elaborate and impactful responses was the tragedy of Line 12 of the Meter. He explained that the incident did not result from a structural failure, but from maintenance, by the current and previous governments.
That is to say, the responsibility was Claudia's.
And beyond the forms, the business language and some moments of ambiguity, it was clear that the captain of the Carso Group rejects militarization, considers security policy as a failure, defends the independence of the Power of attorneyendorses the Division of Powers and said he was opposed to re-election.
In reality, with Slim's public reappearance, we are witnesses that the captain of the Mexican business community does not share the vulgar continuity that López Obrador seeks with his favorite, Claudia. For this reason, it is worth remembering that the powerful company captain had not shown his face to journalists for just over two years and had not spoken as he did about his friend, López Obrador, whom he supported to come to power.
So why and why the marathon press conference, in which journalists were warned that they could ask anything?
Indeed, the first surprise is that, over the course of 3 hours and 45 minutes, Carlos Slim responded to everything, despite the fact that in some questions he preferred ambiguity and in others he acknowledged that he maintains differences with his friend, President Obrador.
He said that, in addition to the insecurity – which is a failure -, in Mexico everything is fine and that the next government, whoever it may be, should be one of consolidation, not continuity.
However, step by step he established the pattern to distance himself from the AMLO government, the official party, the president and his candidate.
For example, he said that in the mornings “we have gone too far in the media confrontation,” alluding to López Obrador's excesses. Even so, he pointed out that there is no confrontation among citizens and that there is social peace, despite the fact that “the only negative thing is the issue of insecurity”, in open reproach for the failure of “hugs and not bullets.”
Among the differences that Slim has with AMLO is the idea of re-election, which the businessman rejected when he disagreed with the presidential opinion on Porfirio Díaz. According to the richest man in Mexico, dictator Díaz “was a great president,” even though he “got too far because he ruled for 30 years.” That is to say, Carlos Slim is not of the idea of re-election.
Also, to everyone's surprise, he defended the division of powers and, when referring to the election of judges and ministers – proposed by AMLO -, he said: “the fundamental thing is that the division of powers continues, since a party can win all the votes and you will be in control of everything.”
Another fundamental difference is the militarization of the country and, above all, involving military forces in business administration. Of that nonsense, Slim said that: “it's too much.”
When responding to the collapse of Metro Line 12, he said, without hesitation, that the problem was not structural, but rather a lack of maintenance in this and other governments, which was seen by everyone as a direct accusation of the presidential candidate, Claudia Sheimbaun. .
He also gave his opinion on the reforms proposed by Obrador to Congress and said that some “are good, like the minimum wage and others are bad.”
But he was especially clear in defending the independence of the Judiciary. He said it this way: “I have seen something that seems wonderful to me: that the Three Powers of the State have differences. Before it was not done, there was enormous influence from the Executive on the Judiciary and now it seems extraordinary to me that the Judiciary decides things that are against the Executive.”
He rejected López's pension fund and, when referring to the distribution of wealth, he was lapidary: “What must be distributed is not the wealth, as the government says, which is wrong, that they distribute the shares of Pemex, which is the wealth of the people… what needs to be done is that the wealth serves to create more wealth and to distribute the fruit of wealth, which is income.”
The hypothesis that we propose here, after the public reappearance of Carlos Slim, is that the businessman wanted to distance himself from López Obrador, his government and the failed results of his management.
And that is why we ask: Will the wealthiest man in Mexico be an asset in favor of Xóchitl Gálvez?
It is worth remembering that Carlos Slim is always with the winners.
At the time.
