Hiroki Totokipresident of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said that PlayStation must focus with greater conviction on one multiplatform approach in order to optimize the takings of its first party productions.
As demonstrated by the latest financial reports, Sony's gaming division achieved very high revenues in the third quarter but very low margins, and a different strategy according to Totoki it could solve the problem, or at least that's the hope.
“In the past we wanted to make our consoles popular and first party games they represented the main tool to achieve this”, said the president of SIE. “It's true, but there are also possible synergies that can be exploited.”
“If you have very strong first party content, coming not only to our consoles but also on other platforms such as PCthis multiplatform approach could grow those productions and help increase profits.”
“We want to work in this direction. Personally I believe there are opportunities to improve margins and I would like to try an aggressive approach in order to enhance our performance from that point of view.”
Day one on PC?
Totoki's words suggest a more aggressive approach from Sony towards the PC platform, also in the wake of the extraordinary success of Helldivers 2 on Steam, with over 200,000 contemporary players.
This could mean concurrent day one releases on PS5 and PCalso and above all for the most important first party titles, which can help to more effectively amortize development costs and improve margins where needed.
