Through an IGN report on the current situation of the gaming industry and the numerous layoffs that have occurred in recent months, a former Ascendant Studios developer has revealed the costs supported by the studio to create Immortals of Aveumwhich as you know turned out to be a commercial flopclaiming that the project was a terrible idea and was far too ambitious for a small team.
According to IGN's source, who wished to remain anonymous, the development costs of Immortals of Aveum amount to 85 million dollars to which are added another 40 million dollars allocated by Electronic Arts for marketing and distribution, for a total of 125 million dollars.
“Immortals was huge oversized to be a studio's debut project,” the ex-employee said. “It cost about $85 million to develop, and I think EA added $40 million for marketing and distribution. ”
“Sure, there was talent on the development team, but trying to make a single-player AAA shooter in today's market was a truly terrible ideaespecially since it was a new IP that was also trying to take advantage of Unreal Engine 5. The result was a repetitive and overlong campaign.”
A flop across the board
Lukewarmly received by critics and audiences in August 2023, Immortals of Aveum also proved to be a heavy commercial flop for Ascendant Studios, with the studio's top management not even a month after launch being forced to fire half the staff due to poor sales of the game.
Bret Robbins, the CEO of Ascendant Studios, justified this result by explaining that Immortals of Aveum was released in a period full of releases with strong commercial appeal, such as Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield, which is certainly a disadvantageous condition for a new IP.
