With a plot about Maceió, Lira parades through Beija-Flor in Sapucaí

The President of the Chamber, deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL), paraded in the early hours of this Monday (12.Feb.2024) for Beija-Flor, in Marquês de Sapucaí, in Rio de Janeiro.

With the samba-plot “Um Delírio de Carnaval na Maceió de Rás Gonguila”, the school paid homage to Benedito dos Santos, a shoeshine boy and carnival worker who founded the Cavaleiro dos Montes block, in the capital of Alagoas.

The parade was sponsored by Maceió City Hall and was attended by the city's mayor, João Henrique Caldas (PL). The capital paid R$8 million for the tribute.

In post on Instagram, Lira said he was proud to honor Maceió, his hometown and electoral stronghold. “This historic moment not only strengthens the incentive for tourism and generates income for the people of Alagoas, but also allows us to proudly display our roots to the world”, he wrote in the caption.

Lira was accompanied by his wife, Ângela Lira, the vice-governor of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Pampolha (MDB), and the leader of the PP in the Chamber, deputy Doctor Luizinho.

Bolsonaro

At the samba school concentration, Lira commented on the operation Tempus Veritatisfrom the PF (Federal Police), which has the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as one of the targets.

“This is up to the Federal Police and the Justice Department. Let's let them proceed within legal normality. There is no stance that Congress can take after the PF’s actions”, he said in an interview with the magazine Look.

“I think that at this moment polarization in Brazil is doing a lot of harm, be it on any side. The main source of democracy is political parties. They cannot be tainted. We hope that as in other investigations, by the PT and other political parties, they were not, the PL now does not have to answer for individual acts. Democracy requires strong parties”, he added.
