Meet the very first electric E-segment station: the BMW i5 Touring (including prices!).
A traditional E-segment station wagon, but electric, we didn't have that yet. BMW is now changing that, because they present the brand new i5 Touring. And – not to forget – also the regular 5 Series Touring.
We don't get to see this car for the first time, because the i5 Touring was already leaked two weeks ago. And we had already seen the patent images. In other words: the i5 Touring does not come as a surprise. But now we can really view the car from all angles and share all the details.
Wouter has also seen the car in real life, so you can watch the video below:
Design
Now that we have nicer pictures (en @wouter has seen the car in real life) our suspicion is confirmed: the Touring is indeed better than the sedan. The straight lines of a station enhance the design. Of course, nothing has changed about the nose (optionally with illuminated grille), so if you thought it was ugly, you still think so.
Luggage compartment
The 5 Series Touring is just as long as the sedan, with a length of 5.06 meters. This makes the new Touring 9.7 centimeters longer than its predecessor. The luggage compartment is also slightly larger, although not much difference. You can store 570 liters in it, where previously it was 560 liters. With the rear seat flat you have 1,700 liters at your disposal. It doesn't matter whether you have the i5 or the regular 5 Series.
Range
No surprises in terms of powertrains: the i5 Touring, like the sedan, is available as an eDrive40 and as an M60 xDrive. These have 340 and 601 hp respectively and they are both equipped with an 81.2 kWh battery pack. The sedan is also available as an xDrive40, but that is not yet available. Another good thing to mention is the range, because it is slightly less than the sedan: the eDrive40 as a Touring has 560 km of range instead of 579 km and the M60 506 instead of 516 km.
Non-electric
If you want a non-electric 5 Series Touring, you currently only have one option: the 520d with 197 hp and 400 Nm of torque. You can choose from rear-wheel drive and xDrive. A plug-in hybrid (probably the 530e) and the 540d will follow in the summer of this year.
Prices
Just like with the sedan, BMW does not let us wait for the prices, they immediately tell us what the i5 and 5 Series Touring should cost. The price list looks like this:
BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring | €79,622 |
BMW i5 M60 Touring | €110,477 |
BMW 520d Touring | €80,242 |
BMW 520d xDrive Touring | €86,004 |
Competition
We do not need to compare the price of the i5 Touring with the competition, because it is simply not there. The 520d Touring actually has very little competition. Audi no longer does diesels, so the only direct competitors are the Mercedes E 300 Estate and the Jaguar XF D200 Sportbrake.
The Mercedes and the Jag are both cheaper, with price tags of €76,207 and €77,353 respectively. In the case of the Jaguar, you have a model that dates from 2015. The Mercedes is of course brand new. Because this is a plug-in hybrid diesel, it costs less, while you have 313 hp. So that's a better deal, as is usually the case with plug-in hybrids.
The BMW i5 and 520d Touring will be available to order in the Netherlands from May.
