The 66th edition of the Grammys has been historic and not only because it was the first presentation of the legendary Joni Mitchell, for the first gramophone to Miley Cyrus or for the career of Taylor Swift, who with the album Midnights achieved the record of being the artist with more album of the year awards, but because Recording Academy voters have given almost all of the top awards to women.
“I would love to tell you that this is the best moment of my life, but I feel happy when I finish a song or when I am in a video (…). For me, the prize is work. All I want to do is continue to be able to do this,” Swift stated and thanked her friend Lana Del Rey. “Many artists would not be where they are or have the inspiration without the work she has done.”
In the televised show, Colombian Karol G was the first woman to win in the best urban music album category; Miley Cyrus won the Grammy for best recording of the year for 'Flowers', and in the best song of the year category, Billie Eilish won for 'What Was I Made For?', from the blockbuster movie Barbie.

The awards for female singers mark a different panorama than what Neil Portnow, former president of the Academy, declared in 2018. At the time, the only woman to receive a solo Grammy at the televised ceremony was Alessia Cara. On Sunday, Phoebe Bridgers won four awards and challenged Portnow. “He has also been accused of sexual violence. Let him rot.”
Céline Dion and Joni Mitchell, applauded
Dion's appearance at the end of the ceremony was a surprise. The singer is away from the stage and fights against rigid person syndrome. “Thank you all! ”She said as she was greeted with applause before presenting the award for album of the year. “When I say I'm happy to be here, I mean it from the heart. “Those who have been lucky enough to be here at the Grammys should never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people around the world.”
For his part, Mitchell sang 'Both Sides Now' and won the award for best folk album: “Whether we know it or not, any of us who have ever dreamed of becoming a revelatory singer-songwriter achieved it on the shoulders of one Joni Mitchell . She is one of the most influential and emotionally generous creators in human history,” said her producer Brandi Carlile.
As for Peruvians, Latin Grammy winner Susana Baca did not win the award for best global music album with her celebrated album Epifanías. And Tony and Mimy Succar attended the ceremony for their nomination for best tropical album. “You are a winner for me and this is the beginning. “I am going to continue working on a lot of music for you,” the producer wrote. “An honor to lose against you,” he added, tagging Rubén Blades.
