Finland former head coach of the national skiing team Kari-Pekka Kyrö keep Antti Tuiskun the goal of participating in the WC skiing as a good thing for the sport, even if he does not want to change the WC event in the direction of fitness sports.
“It's serious, Finland's current broadest top endurance sports cavalcade and benchmark. I thought it was really inferior when Yle's editor went, maybe a couple of years ago, to 50 to have an adventure and serve sausage and buns to those competitors during the race,” Kyrö says about the events of the 2021 Ristijärvi Skiing Championships referring to.
“Fitness sports and competitive fitness events are separate.”
In the same breath, Kyrö welcomes Tuisku, who is starting his competitive skiing project, and who ended his career as an artist last summer, to the starting line.
“SM skiing can take it and needs it, and probably knows how to take advantage of it. Antti would do well in increasing interest and actually appreciation between ranks 100 and 200,” says Kyrö.
“
“Antti would do well in increasing interest and, in fact, appreciation.”
A gust of wind said in his announcement about his plans to train 700 hours a year. What kind of amount is this for a 39-year-old active fitness enthusiast aiming to become a competitive skier?
“I think it's a matter of taste whether it's 500, 600 or 700 hours, depending on what you do. But if it's about running, I'll say it straight up, it's too much. There is a risk of stress injury and overtraining,” Kyrö answers.
“If it includes other imitation training for skiing, for example summer skiing and cycling or rowing and kayaking, then the training times can be much longer and the risks are lower.”
Regarding the amount, however, Kyrö urges to stick to one limit.
“If you don't train for 500 hours, you shouldn't go to the men's SC skiing. If you can't do it or can't bear it or get into a spiral of stress injuries, then that goal is too hard.”
“
“If you don't train for 500 hours, then you shouldn't go to the men's SC skiing.”
Former the pop star ran the first marathon of his life in December. Final time in Málaga at the marathon was a handsome 3.15.42 for an active exerciser.
According to Kyrö, a result of 3,500–3,600 meters in Cooper's test would be a good starting level for the skiing project of Tuisku, who has a background in running.
“The 3,600 in the Cooper would create such a maximum endurance base that you can really aim for Eetu Isometsän winning. It's not easy, but it's possible.”
The skiing star of yesteryears Jari Isometsän son ranked at the weekend in Vantaa SM skis, in the 20 km traditional skiing intermediate start, in 54th place. A total of 131 skiers reached the final results.
Tuisku plans to participate in the SC competition in freestyle skiing.
“
“3,600 in Cooper would create a maximum endurance base with which you can aim to win Eetu Isometsä.”
How it's a tough trick if Tuisku can sneak up to the middle of the results list or into the top 100 with approximately the same number of participants?
“It's a little bigger sensation,” Kyrö replies.
“The men's 10 or 20 free is the toughest race. There were 15 skiers in Tampere last year and ten in Rovaniemi the following year, and if Antti Tuisku skis among the hundred, then it will be a sensation.”
Kyrö believes that 140–170 men will participate in the men's short freestyle ski championship, depending on the location.
“If you can beat 20-30 men from the side or from the tail end or whatever you want to say nicely, then that's a performance worth raising your hat to. There are no exercisers there,” he says.
“
“If Antti Tuisku skis among the hundred, it will be a sensation.”
Crooked considers this group of young men who ski regularly in competitions to be the elite of Finnish endurance sports.
“When you compare skiing to a hundred, a top guy like this Janne Ukonmaanahothe current top coach and 10–15 years ago a hurdler of about 8.30 could do it,” says Kyrö.
Thunder skin skiing In Tuisku's childhood landscapes in Ounasvaara, he finished 83rd in the 10 freestyle championships.
“Last year in Rovaniemi, he was just one of the hundred. It's a really hard performance. Pursuing that by focusing on SC skiing for a year would be a sensation in my opinion. And that goal doesn't have to be that hard,” says Kyrö.
Both Tuisku and Ukonmaanaho were born in 1984. Ukonmaanaho ran
3,000 meters steeplechase career best time 8:27.08.
“
“And that goal doesn't have to be that hard.”
I idolized Tuisku, who rose to the top from the first production season in 2003, wondered in his press release whether he can change in just over a year from a wannabe athlete to a true athlete to be taken seriously.
Where would an experienced coach draw the line in this case?
“He is probably a very disciplined, hard-working and dedicated person, so let's set one to three years' time and aim for one hundred. If he does it, it's a really hard performance”, Kyrö answers.
“Then you can say you're a male competitive skier.”
According to Kyrö, Tuisku's goal to participate in the World Ski Championships is “definitely an opportunity” for the entire sport. He hopes that the interest revolving around the issue will be directed towards city dwellers and young people.
“
“He must be a very disciplined, hardworking and dedicated person.”
Particularly Kyrö considers it important to reach school-age children and the 10-20 age group in general.
“In any case, the interest in a year-long or longer project like that is a positive thing for skiing,” he says.
“But it's not like the next 30 40-year-old gymnasts from Antti's starting point will show up for the SM skiing. I don't think it's the right direction of development, and probably nothing like that is happening either.”
