US Senate, bipartisan agreement on aid to Kiev in exchange for more funds for the borders
US senators have reached agreement on a package that links increased border funding to the release of aid for Ukraine. The initial vote is expected mid-week. Senators have been negotiating a deal to combat illegal immigration for months, with Republicans insisting on increased border security in exchange for approval of a White House request for more than $60 billion for Kiev.
President Joe Biden said he “strongly” supports the bipartisan deal that, if approved, would provide billions of dollars in new aid to Ukraine and Israel, while increasing funding for U.S. borders and toughening asylum laws. It is unclear whether the bill has the 60 supporters needed to pass the first procedural vote in the Democratic-controlled Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously declared the package “dead on arrival,” though he appeared to change course when he told Fox Business on Friday that he had “no bias.”
The so-called supplemental national security legislation provides total funding of $118.3 billion, including $60 billion in support for war-torn Ukraine, which corresponds to the White House's request, and $14.1 billion dollars for security assistance to Israel, according to a summary released by Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray. The deal also includes $20.2 billion for U.S. border security and myriad changes to immigration policies.
