This is the second time in five years that the Sudanese live in almost complete isolation due to the cessation of communications services, after the complete disconnection of the network minutes before the operation to disperse the protesters’ sit-in in front of the Army General Command in central Khartoum on June 3, 2019.
On Sunday, the services of the three telecommunications companies “Sudani”, “MTN” and “Zain” were suspended in most regions of Sudan.
While Zain was operating in some areas, MTN and Sudani announced, in two separate statements, a complete interruption of communication and Internet services for unspecified technical reasons.
The interruption of communications services has raised great concerns, as the majority of the population relies on banking applications to manage their daily lives, in light of the scarcity of liquidity and the outage of most banks and automated teller machines, especially in the capital, Khartoum, and the cities and regions of central Sudan.
Traders in a number of Sudanese cities said that, on Monday, they were unable to obtain any banking services, after most banks closed their doors due to their systems being offline.
Since the outbreak of war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, many infrastructure facilities and public buildings have been exposed to massive destruction due to aerial and ground bombardments by both sides of the fighting.
The destruction affected large parts of the electricity and water networks, leading to the interruption of services to more than 60 percent of the capital’s areas. Aerial and ground bombardments also caused significant damage to most residential neighborhoods, markets, and industrial and economic facilities.
