Having a spare wheel in the car is not a given.
You used to see them everywhere. Under the car, behind the car or in the trunk: the spare wheel. It was as obvious as butter on a sandwich with flakes. Nowadays that is no longer the case. More and more car manufacturers have stopped offering a spare wheel in the car.
Nowadays, cars mainly come with a kit that allows you to temporarily inflate a flat tire and drive to the nearest garage. Then of course there are the run-flat tires that mainly BMWs are equipped with. Yet nothing beats the old-fashioned spare wheel in the car, according to a recent study in the United Kingdom.
82 percent of respondents miss the spare wheel in the car. This is evident from a study in which more than 10,000 members of the AA (the British ANWB) participated. Being in England pot holes a serious problem: large holes in roads can destroy a tire and cause millions in damage every year. It is not surprising that the British want to have an extra tire in the car.
Perhaps it is something for the older driver, who is still used to having a spare wheel. 20 percent of respondents say they do not think about a spare wheel when buying a car.
In more than half of British breakdowns involving a flat tire, there was no spare wheel present. This is evident from figures for 2023. In most cases, such a kit is used to temporarily inflate the tire or a mobile tire farmer is used who can replace a tire on location.
In the United Kingdom, the AA wants to campaign to increase awareness among motorists: realize that a car often no longer has a spare wheel. And that you should buy one yourself to remain mobile in a breakdown situation. (via Autoexpress)
