The Colombia Under-23 National Team totally disappointed in its participation in the Venezuelan Olympic Qualifiers. The team sealed the worst Colombian performance in the entire history of tournaments organized by the South American Football Confederation.
Colombia finished last in group A, with zero points and not a single goal scored: lost against Ecuador (3-0), Brazil (2-0), Venezuela (1-0) and Bolivia (2-0), despite having a squad that, in theory, did not seem so weak.
Apart from the poor individual performances, coach Héctor Cárdenas was targeted for the team's errors in planning, approach and play. However, the players, incredibly, appeared at the press conference after the last game, against Bolivia, to support the coach.
“It is a hard moment for all of them, but here we are standing up, with honor, with pain for our country because it is difficult after trying. The team is looking for a way and has been resilient during all these games, competing until the last moment, giving everything for their country and this is a learning experience for everyone. Excuses, a thousand apologies to our country, but we are sure that there is a lot of future and talent here. “Football is about opportunities and we are all going to have them”Cárdenas said that day and hinted that he could continue.
The day the executive committee will decide the future of Cárdenas
Apparently, the executive committee of the Colombian Football Federation does not think the same and they have already set a date to define the future of the coach, who surpassed his own anti-record: already in 2019 he had been last and without points in the South American U-17 in Peru.
According to journalist Sebastián Vargas, the committee meeting is scheduled for next February 13 and the main topic will be the departure of Cárdenas, who has been linked to the FCF since 2018.
With the U-20 National Team, Cárdenas was runner-up in the South American Championship that was played in the country and reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Argentina. But then, at the Pan American Games in Santiago, he failed miserably by being left out of the medals and losing fifth place in shots from the penalty spot against Uruguay.
