While we continue to incessantly debate the validity of the new law which in Bologna limits the maximum speed on most roads to 30 km/h, in the rest of Italy a series of infringements endless. The use of alcohol and drugs, in this sense, is proving to be a constant also during this year: just think that in the month of January alone there are approximately 5,000 licenses have already been withdrawn to drivers found positive on the breathalyzer test and for drugs.
Data on the rise
The protagonists of the checks and therefore of the sanctions are the Traffic Police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza and Local Police. 5,000 is a very high number: ASAPS makes it known that throughout last year, just to make a comparison, the Traffic Police had identified well 13,594 motorists positive on the breathalyzer, we are therefore faced with an increase in data compared to previous years. And it is a problem that concerns motorists throughout the national territory: in the last week of January alone, licenses were withdrawn in Ancona, Caserta, Ascoli Piceno, Rome, Rimini and dozens of other cities.
Increasing checks
“We are noticing a positive return to the past, more patrols and more checks but also a significant number of licenses withdrawn by the Traffic Police, Carabinieri, Financial Police and Local Police throughout the national territory for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs – commented Giordano Biserni, President of ASAPS. We also see this from the data of our observers which indicate a decrease in fatal accidents on weekends. While waiting for the approval of the bill on the reform of the code, which is proceeding in 'turtle' mode in the Transport Committee of the Chamber, with the approval of very few amendments and many postponed to subsequent sessions, we take note of the desire of the Ministry of the Interior to have given instructions on the increase of checks on the roads”.
Alcohol and drugs
“Drunk drivers are 'time bombs' and we need 'bomb squads on the roads' with the best means from a technological point of view – concluded Biserni – We estimated in around 5,000 licenses have already been withdrawn in the first weeks of the new year, for impaired driving, even with high breathalyzer levels, but we must think about how many accidents have been avoided. We need to start saying it. We hope for the continuation of widespread checks, and we wait the approval of the new regulations which risk seeing the light, due to the double parliamentary passage, well after spring 2024″.
