MachineGames has revealed that the plot of Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle centers on a real hypothesis that many ancient sites around the world were intentionally built in alignment, forming the so-called great circle (Great circle, which is the English name of the game).
“A great circle is a circle that divides a sphere in half” said Gustafsson. “On Earth, the best known is, of course, the equator. But it can exist from anywhere really, and it's used a lot in aviation when plotting the route.”
“It turns out that there is a very real and mysterious great circle which is not the equator, but which connects many of the greatest historical sites in history, such as Giza, Easter Island, Sukhothai, Nazca and many others. Their connection has remained a mystery, and this provides the perfect adventure for our game.”
Details on the ancient Circle
There great circle theory, proposed by Jim Alison and published online in 1995, suggests that many of the world's ancient structures are connected by an unbroken great circle. Some ancient sites are not perfectly aligned with the proposed line, but their inclusion is justified because they deviate only by one degree or less.
Ancient sites that align with the great circle include Easter Island, Nazca, Ollantaytambo, and Giza. Among the sites that lie slightly outside the line are Petra, Perseopolis, Ollantaytambo, Machupicchu, the Oracle of Amun in the Siwa Oasis, Mohenjo Daro, Ur and Angkor Wat. This circle does not only include emerged lands, but also unexplored territories and submerged depths where ancient sites potentially lie, according to the theory.
The idea that ancient societies deliberately constructed aligned sacred sites has been theorized for the first time in 1846 and affected many in the early 20th century. The theory led some proponents to identify lines connecting England's enigmatic monuments, megaliths and medieval churches. These alignments became known as “ley lines”, or lines of power also related to magic.
Currently, the controversial theories of ley lines and great circles are not supported by facts and have been classified by many historians, archaeologists and anthropologists as pseudoarchaeology or pseudoscience.
