The controversy continues after the decision of the Municipality of Bologna to introduce the new speed limit of 30 km/h on most of the city's streets. In the last few hours also the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Matteo Salviniattacked the administration of the Emilian capital and the mayor of the PD Matteo Lepore: the leader of the League speaks firmly of an unreasonable measure and of problems outweigh the benefitsasking for a direct comparison to avoid forcing.
The minister's opinion
“Forcing an entire city to come to a standstill at 30mph risks being harmful to everyone, starting from those who work, without proportional benefits in terms of safety and reduction of emissions – wrote Salvini on his official Facebook page – I am very surprised that the Municipality of Bologna also motivates the provision with the need not to cover the chirping of birds with the noise of vehicles. And it surprises me that the administration holds against me what the previous minister, Enrico Giovannini, had done, who had hoped for the adoption of 30 zones. Imposing the limit throughout the municipality (and not just in the most at-risk areas) betrays the spirit of the norm. I have asked my ministry for all possible checks to protect the people of Bologna, and I am ready to discuss with the administration, hoping for common sense and concreteness”.
The mayor of Bologna responds
The response from Mayor Lepore was not long in coming, attacking Salvini, accusing him of relaunch fake news regarding the measure which came into force in all respects from Monday: “Our task in the institutions is to make courageous choices, taking risks personally, given that I am here to put my face to it. I ask the people of Bologna to be patient because it will take at least two weeks to make an initial assessment with real data on how the launch of City 30 is going. The citizens are respecting the limits, it is obvious to everyoneboth during peak hours and outside, so I thank them because, even if many do not agree, they are respecting the rules”.
Asaps favorable
Giordano Biserni, president of Asaps, also spoke on the topic and spoke to Il Corriere di Bologna with words in favor of the measure: “There is little to say, Bologna has embraced the future. Minister Salvini makes a mistake in talking about an unreasonable measure, there are numbers to prove it. Let's consider Bologna Città 30 a positive experiment which must be addressed with due serenity. We are talking about limitations in force in London, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Brussels, Bilbao and partly also Paris. Now we hope that Turin, Rome, Milan and Naples will also imitate Bologna. The numbers tell us what the city is 30 scientifically reasonable“.
