Traditional large Citroëns were always striking and could not be confused with anything else. But although many people find them charming, there is no longer a market for cars of the caliber XM and C6. Insofar as it really was there at all. The closest to the brand's classic luxury strokes is this Citroën C5
At its introduction, Citroën claimed that the C5 X is a mix between a sedan, an SUV and a station wagon. We didn't quite see that then, and we still don't. In fact it is a stretched and jacked up hatchback. Which doesn't mean we don't like it.
Cars with a low and graceful profile that stand a little higher on their legs (Volvo V90 Cross Country, Mercedes E-class All-Terrain) always trigger a certain greed in us. Not 'I want to but I can't'; more like 'it's actually not possible and I'll do it anyway'. Citroën never achieves anything with uniformity, so we like the fact that they made this choice for their flagship. Moreover, you can certainly use that extra bit of ground clearance, because the number of speed bumps in your area will not decrease either.
The version with 180 hp is more than fine
In addition to pure fuel engines, the Citroën C5 This slightly more modest version with 180 hp has recently been added, making the first one actually redundant. Even with less power, this is a pleasantly smooth car, but that doesn't matter: behind the wheel, peace and tranquility naturally take over you. Haste is for imbeciles.
If you leave it to the C5 In that case, the eight-speed automatic transmission does not hang there aimlessly, but simply shifts along. Good for the electric range, which is officially 62 kilometers. With the E-Save option in the infotainment you can fix the battery charge at (or top up via the petrol engine up to) a range of 10, 20 or the maximum number of kilometers.
In Hybrid mode, the car switches smoothly, but not imperceptibly, between the two drive options. There's also a Sport mode, but other than keeping the fuel engine running, it doesn't really make any sense. Steering is easier than winding up a spool of thread and there is no option to shift gears yourself.
The C5 X is more spacious on the inside than its big brother
The interior of the C5 You wouldn't expect that with that roofline. The massage chairs keep going endlessly, so you don't have to dig through menus every 15 minutes to keep them active. Materials and buttons are the same as in cheaper Citroëns, and that is a difficult story when you have to compete with high-quality (German) stuff in terms of price and prestige.
But the Citroën C5 beautiful and silky soft. That plus its endearing appearance give the C5 X more than enough reason to exist in our opinion. Now also with less horsepower – wonderful.
