Campos Neto's term runs until December 2024; President Lula may suggest a new name, which will have to be approved by the Senate
The president of Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks), Isaac Sidney, stated on Friday (19.jan.2024) that Roberto Campos Neto's successor in B.C. Isaac Sidney said that the choice of the president of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), as for the next name to command the BC, it is one of the challenges for 2024. Campos Neto's mandate – indicated by Jair Bolsonaro (PL)– at the institution it will last until the end of this year.
According to the president of Febraban, despite pressure from the federal government to reduce the interest rate in 2023, the Central Bank's autonomy has not been threatened.
“My concern is not with the name itself. This is the president's prerogative [Lula]. The new president, whoever he may be, will need to have all the technical freedom to make clear his absolute and unwavering commitment to controlling inflation”he declared.
Sidney also said that the new president of the BC, who will take office in 2025, “cannot be perceived as someone hesitant to control inflation”.
