Tonight, Tuesday 9 January 2024, at 9.30 pm on Rai 1, Pattini d'argento will be broadcast, a 2020 film directed by Michail Lokšin, in his directorial debut, based on the 1865 novel of the same name by Mary Mapes Dodge, by which transfers the setting from the Netherlands to fin de siècle St. Petersburg. It is also inspired by Romeo and Juliet. But let's see all the information together in detail.
Plot
Russia, Christmas 1899. The young Matvej is kicked out of a rich kitchen and loses his job as a courier, but he doesn't give up and meets a gang of thieves while skating, known to the tsarist police as the “Skaters' Gang”. Matvej, despite having a generous heart, agrees to join the gang of pickpockets to pay for the expenses of treating his father, who is suffering from tuberculosis.
One night, on a bet, Matvej enters the property of Alisa Marija Augusta von Schlesenberg-Vjazemskaja, daughter of a very conservative minister, who wants her married to distract her from her ambitions as a scholar. Alisa blackmails Matvej into reporting him and has him accompany her, passing him off as her husband, to the entrance test to study chemistry at the university, which her father had forbidden her to attend. The girl passes the exam brilliantly, but when Matvej is consulted (as her “husband”) and asked to sign to allow her to actually become part of the student body, the boy remains dumbfounded and does not sign, making everyone understand that be illiterate. The two false spouses are therefore discovered and sent away.
Even if Alisa is somewhat annoyed, on the way home she understands that Matvej is a good boy. The two then meet again in secret on Christmas night. Matvey takes Alisa to the ice market and then to a place frequented by the other members of her gang, where the leader of the gang, Alex, explains his point of view to her and gives her a copy of Marx's Capital. Meanwhile, Count Arkadij begins to court Alica, encouraged by her stepmother and appreciated by her father.
Count Arkadij, as Captain of the Guards, forms a special team of skater-policemen to defeat pickpockets and sets a trap against them, achieving unexpected success. Mukha, one of the gang members, is handcuffed while trying to steal the wallet from an undercover officer and would be arrested if Matvej did not expose himself to save him. Making a daring escape throughout the ice market, the two manage to outrun the guards. However, Arkady manages to reach Matvey and could have succeeded in capturing him if Alex hadn't shot him in the legs. However, as a result of the chase, Graf, the member of the gang in charge of keeping the stolen goods, is captured.
