The first month of operation of flights with Madrid and Barcelona by the Volotea company has resulted in an occupancy rate above 60% on connections with Barcelona, and lower in the case of the capital of Spain, according to what was announced on this Tuesday morning the Minister of Public Works, José Manuel Pancorbo. This presented the new bus service between the regional airport and the cities of Murcia and Cartagena. This service, which will begin next Friday, is intended to support flights with Madrid and Barcelona, although it will also serve passengers on other routes, depending on schedules.
Accompanied by the director of the airport, Carlos San Martín, the counselor explained that he has fulfilled his department's commitment to enable this road service, for which 22,591 euros have been allocated by the Ministry. The cost of the trip for the user will be 1.85 euros. The service, provided by Interbus, will be operational until March 25, with the possibility of extending it if it is successful, to this company or another, Pancorbo added.
Criticisms of the AVE
It is the first time that the regional airport has a bus service outside of the summer months. The counselor indicated that the objective is to facilitate direct transfer from the airport to the bus stations of Murcia and Cartagena for all those travelers who are heading to their destinations or proceeding to them from these points.
He noted that the bus service will be available to all travelers taking advantage of the coincidence of flights on both Mondays (a total of 16) and Fridays (a total of 14). Although the majority will be used for domestic flights, those of a tourist nature will also benefit and, in addition, will be boosted in the months of the summer season.
Pancorbo pointed out that the alternative by road to travel to Madrid and Barcelona “takes many hours.” He estimated that flights with Madrid and Barcelona “will have a future” and was optimistic about it, which is why he will continue to support this initiative. He considered the arrival of the AVE to Murcia “a disappointment.” “We all know that it takes in the least two hours and three quarters, and we believe that this is an alternative for people who want to get to the capital of Spain more quickly.” He added that Vox is committed “to the freedom” of users to choose the way they move.
