Cielo reports that retail sales in December 2023 grew 1.1%, discounting inflation, compared to the same month in 2022, according to the Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA). In nominal terms, which reflect the sales revenue observed by the retailer, growth was 4.3%.
In the month marked by the main retail date, Christmas, the macro sectors of Non-Durable Goods and Durable and Semi-Durable Goods grew 2.3% and 0.9%, respectively. In Non-Durable Goods, the segment that stood out the most was Supermarkets and Hypermarkets. Optical and Jewelry was the highlight in Durable and Semi-Durable Goods.
The Services macro sector, however, fell by 2.5%. Bars and restaurants were mainly responsible for the drop.
Overall, calendar effects harmed Retail in December, which had one fewer Thursday and one more Sunday, a slower day for commerce, compared to the same month in 2022, says Cielo.
“The month of December was marked by deflation in important Retail segments, such as Supermarkets and Hypermarkets and Furniture, Electronics and Department, precisely those that contributed most to growth”, says Carlos Alves, vice-president of Technology and Business at Cielo. “The result could be more positive if the 24th, which usually has a strong impact on sales, had not fallen on a Sunday. This factor especially affected high street stores. We know that most of them are partially open or don’t even open their doors on Sunday,” he says.
E-commerce and in-person sales
In December, e-commerce grew 4.0% in nominal terms. In-person sales rose 4.4% in nominal terms compared to the same month in 2022.
4th quarter
Sales in the fourth quarter of 2023 fell 0.7%, already discounted for inflation, in relation to the same quarter of 2022. In nominal terms, there was growth of 2.6%.
Semester
After discounting inflation, retail revenue in the second half of 2023 fell 1.0% compared to the same half of 2022. In nominal terms, there was an increase of 2.2%.
Annual result
Considering the entire year 2023, the deflated Retail result showed a reduction of 0.6% compared to 2022. In nominal terms, there was growth of 3.5%.
