At CES 2024, Sony Honda Mobility presented the AFEELAa new electric car created in collaboration with Polyphony Digitalthe authors of Gran Turismo 7, and that it will technically be possible to drive using the PS5 DualSense.
The car will be equipped with a series of cutting-edge interior technologies, including monitors on the dashboard and in the back of the front seats, with various customization options themed Fortnite and Spider-Man.
Additionally, more details about Sony Honda Mobility's collaboration with Epic Games have been revealed, in the form of a simulator which will make use of “virtual spaces to create new mobility experiences for users”.
“This tool simulates external environmental conditions, such as information about other vehiclespedestrians, terrain and weather conditions,” says Sony Honda Mobility. “By combining this technology with AR, users will be able to enjoy an immersive experience that also improves safety.”
“Sony Honda Mobility provides a 3D map of great visual impact on which extensive metadata from the Internet is superimposed. Map data can also be used to expand the possibilities for developing gaming and entertainment features.”
More interesting for gamers, AFEELA will be added in Gran Turismo 7 for free via an update, expected during 2024 but currently without a precise release date.
Can the AFEELA be driven with the PS5 DualSense?
During the presentation of the car, Sony Honda COO Izumi Kawanishi used the PS5 DualSense to steer and maneuver the AFEELA remotely to the stage, to the amazement of those present.
Before imagining a future of cars driven with the help of the PS5 DualSense, it is worth pointing out that Kawanishi specified that this demonstration was only “for the purposes of a tech showcase”. This is therefore a feature that we probably won't see in products on the market.
“This remote driving demonstration is just for a tech showcase,” Kawanishi said. “However, we believe that software can define new functions and new values. We want to redefine the relationship between people and mobility.”
These are not the only news arriving from Sony during CES 2024. During the event, in fact, the Gravity Rush film was shown, there were updates on the Horizon and God of War TV series, a new record of active users was announced on the PSN and the milestone of 50 million PS5s sold worldwide.
