Genoa – “Orlando's willingness to run is a positive fact, it seems to me to be an excellent opening to a discussion on the regional elections that had not yet been started.” The deputy of the Democratic Party, Luca Pastorino, welcomes the start of the debate on the next regional elections in the centre-left. And, faced with the challenge to be launched against Toti's centre-right, he offers his availability for a direct commitment. “Let's not force the timing of the discussion, but I can also give my willingness to run.”
Pastorino, what do you think of former minister Andrea Orlando's willingness to run for the Region?
«It seems to me to be an excellent opening to a discussion that had not yet been started. It's true that the European Championships come first, but if we start talking about regionals early it's better. Orlando's is the profile of a potential national candidacy, which, as he himself underlined, all the parties in the coalition will have the opportunity to evaluate. I consider it very positive that we are starting to attack the topic.”
In the rumors of Ligurian politics there are also whispers of her as a possible candidate. Is this a realistic scenario?
«There has never been a political discussion on this: they talk more about my candidacy in the centre-right, perhaps because I am one of the few on the left who has not lost recently. As far as I'm concerned, I can say that I feel part of this journey, I'd like to make a contribution.”
If the conditions were right, would you be available to be a presidential candidate?
«I can also give my availability, with the awareness that we are talking about a premature discussion that must not take place in forced times. At the same time it is right to start talking about it, checking the perimeter of the field and obviously the contents. And I would like to add that, in view of the regional elections, it will be important for the Democratic Party to pay attention to the centrality of Genoa.”
Do you think the conditions exist for the coalition to have a wide left field?
«The field will have to be as large as possible considering the current conditions. It's clear that with some forces it seems difficult to mend things.”
Who are you referring to?
«Beyond the personal antipathies of the coordinator of Italia Viva, Raffaella Paita, both towards me and towards Orlando, it seems to me that the political positioning of the Renzians towards the centre-right in Liguria is clear».
The alliance with the Cinquestelle does not seem to be taken for granted, given the fluctuating relationship at a national level between the Democratic Party and the movement led by Giuseppe Conte.
«An alliance is maturing in Piedmont, as in Sardinia. In Liguria, in theory we should be advantaged by the fact that we have already made a long journey in 2020, with the Giallorossi model. It is clear that we are talking about a scenario that needs to be verified but, also judging from the first reactions to the availability shown by Orlando, it seems to me that in the centre-left there is a desire to create a common front”.
The former presidential candidate, Ferruccio Sansa, harshly criticized the centre-left, saying that the coalition was unable to renew itself. Is that so?
«I can talk about the Democratic Party, because I don't allow myself to intervene on other parties. Sansa is wrong, there has been a phase of important renewal in the party.”
What does it take to win regionals?
“We must be able to propose a coalition and a serious program: I believe in it, and I want to give my small contribution.”
With what priorities?
«First of all healthcare, on which I hope that all Ligurians have the perception of what is not being done by the centre-right council. And then focus on a model of sustainable development: we seem to be those of the “no” but it's not true, it's just a rhetoric similar to that of the sofa for recipients of Citizenship Income. And then the environment: the arrogance with which the LNG terminal affair was carried out by the centre-right is emblematic.”
There is a lot of discussion in the centre-right about Toti's third term: what do you think?
«It seems to me that it is a national discussion that concerns not only Liguria. But if the political framework does not change, I believe that Meloni and his colleagues intend to occupy more boxes. It is an element of strategy that cannot be underestimated, also because the relations between the parties of the governing majority are not as good as they seem.”
