Emílio Garcia visited the CBF headquarters this Monday (8 January) and said that directors are “relieved” with the STF’s decision to reappoint Ednaldo
FIFA's legal director, Emílio Garcia, visited the headquarters of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) this Monday (8.jan.2024) and declared support for Ednaldo Rodrigues, who had been away of the presidency on December 7 and resumed the position on January 4th after the decision of minister Gilmar Mendes, from STF (Federal Court of Justice).
“FIFA came here to guarantee the independence of the CBF and compliance with the statutes of FIFA and Conmebol. We are relieved with the STF’s decision that restores the presidency of the CBF to Ednaldo, we are happy that we are back to the original situation”said Garcia.
The action at the STF was filed by PC do B (Communist Party of Brazil). The acronym alleged that FIFA and Conmebol (Confederação Sil-Americana de Futebol) did not recognize external interference in the CBF. “As a result, no one will be able to register the Brazilian team, which will be left out of the Pre-Olympic Tournament if the situation continues”stated the party.
Garcia expressed concern about the risk of punishment for the CBF if the intervention of the TJ-RJ (Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro) continued. “There was a real risk that the FIFA Council would exclude Brazilian teams, in all categories, and Brazilian clubs from competing in international competitions”he declared.
ADI (Direct Action of Unconstitutionality) 7580 was filed on December 22 after Ednaldo Rodrigues was removed from office by the TJ-RJ. The decision also appointed the president of the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice), José Perdiz, as interim president of the CBF.
“The most important thing for FIFA and Conmebol is that Brazilian football chose Ednaldo democratically”said Garcia.
The president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, declared that the time is now to “Restore normality in Brazilian football”.
