License plate guru Jasper Verweij is of course on top of it and can report that the first gray license plate according to the new format was issued today. This honor goes to a Ford Transit Connect, which is given the license plate V-01-BBB.
As Jasper rightly points out, there is something special going on: BBB is not on the list of prohibited license plates, while this is the case with other political movements. And we're not just talking about the NSB. You will also not find VVD, PVV and SGP on a license plate.
Why is BBB allowed? That's a mystery to us too. An avid Party for the Animals voter is no more interested in a BBB license plate than an atheist is in need of an SGP license plate or a Muslim in a PVV license plate.
By the way, the RDW sometimes makes a mistake with political license plates. For example, almost a hundred NSB license plates were accidentally issued in 2010. Or worse (according to some): a series of VVD license plates were also issued by mistake. These could be exchanged free of charge at the time.
Whether you can also exchange a BBB license plate free of charge? We don't know, but if you make enough fuss about it you might have a chance. This license plate policy does not seem to be very consistent.
