Lebanese authorities said on Monday (8) that a senior commander of Hezbollah's elite Radwan force was killed in an alleged Israeli drone attack. Security sources identified him as Wissam al-Tawil, deputy head of a special Lebanese militia unit and a key leader of operations in the south of the country.
According to sources consulted by the agency Reuters, who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity, al-Tawil was with another member of the terrorist group in a car, in the village of Majdal Selm, at the time of the alleged airstrike, which killed them both. “Things are likely to get worse from now on,” one of the security sources said in an interview.
To the French agency AFPa Lebanese official confirmed that the commander “had a leading role in managing Hezbollah operations in the south.”
It remains unclear whether the military leader was killed as part of ongoing exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) or whether he was specifically targeted.
This is the most recent episode in the series of actions between the Israeli Army and the Lebanese militia, which have exchanged attacks since October 8, when Hezbollah and other terrorist factions allied with Lebanon were involved in daily clashes across the border, following the invasion surprise from Hamas.
This Sunday (7), Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said during an interview with the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal that the country could go to war with Lebanon again if attacks across the border that divides the two territories are not ended.
Since the death of Hamas' number two was confirmed last week, an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, which began three months ago, has become increasingly possible. The terrorist group Hezbollah has promised to “avenge” the alleged attack that murdered Saleh Al Arouri, one of the leaders of the Palestinian militia, in Beirut.
