At least three civilians died in the early hours of Monday (8) in a new massive wave of missiles against the territory of Ukraine, in which the Moscow Army used more than 50 missiles of different types against four regions in the northeast, southeast, center and west of the country, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Of the 51 missiles and eight Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones launched by Russia in this round of attacks, Ukrainian air defenses only managed to shoot down the eight drones and 18 missiles, a much lower than usual interception rate.
Russia has used, among other types of weapons, Kinzhal supersonic missiles, the most difficult to intercept of all those it has in its arsenal.
The Ukrainian Army is capable of intercepting the Kinzhals in the Kiev region, where it has deployed most of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems received from its Western allies, but are vulnerable to Russian ballistic and supersonic missiles in almost the rest of the country.
One of the victims died in the Dnipropetrovsk province (center), while the other two died in the Khmelnytskyy region (west). Kharkiv (northeast) and Zaporizhya (southeast) are the other two regions where missiles fell.
The attack also left a total of 33 people injured in the four regions, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said. According to the country's Air Force, the missiles targeted critical infrastructure, civilian industries and military targets.
Russia intensified its air strikes against Ukraine over Christmas and New Year. On December 29, it launched more than 150 missiles and drones against Ukrainian territory, breaking the record for the number of projectiles used in a single wave of air strikes since the start of the war. As a result, more than 50 civilians died across Ukraine. (With EFE Agency)
