Exercise | In gyms, the same dull pattern always repeats itself at the beginning of the year: “The gyms could take a look in the mirror”

In January, the number of customers in many salons increases, but also decreases just as quickly. It's important for a beginner exerciser to remember to stay calm and persevere, exercise professionals advise.

New year promises can be seen again in gyms from the beginning of the year, the entrepreneurs tell HS. At the moment, many city dwellers clearly have the idea that this year I will exercise more than before.

Typically, however, the phenomenon is only momentary.

Group exercise classes are added to the calendar at the beginning of January and then they are removed in February,” sums up the gym owner Vera Strömsholm.

He opened a King4Fit gym in Vantaa three years ago by Tony Strömsholm with.

According to Strömsholm, also personal trainers [pt] that is, sales of personal fitness trainers' services will increase from the beginning of the year.

“Perhaps there will also be such a thing that you can now start investing in yourself. Christmas has been lived for the children and the family, and now, if you can financially, take that pt.”

Pattern is known also from previous years. At first, the halls are crowded, but already in February they are empty. Many beginners lose their enthusiasm.

During the course of the year, gyms look for new customers through, among other things, various promotional campaigns. Strömsholm does not base campaigns.

“Gyms could take a look in the mirror at how much they want to make things difficult for their own customers.”

By this he refers to campaigns where new customers are offered, for example, free months of training, which often inevitably congest the gym temporarily.

“If that campaign is just in January, then that hall is completely swollen.”

Also since 2017 has run Kuntokeskus Fit Tammisto Riku Kärkkäinen says that the rush of customers at the turn of the year is an annual phenomenon.

It is reflected in the daily number of visitors.

“When we normally have 600-700 customers a day, in January we have 700-800 customers. Personal trainers have more work and their calendars are filling up.”

The number of visitors is leveling off towards the usual one little by little as we move towards spring.

According to Kärkkäinen and Strömsholm, another, albeit not as strong, spike in visitors takes place in early autumn.

Strömsholm a tip for beginners is to remember to be calm.

“Prefer to do shorter workouts more often, and try to start so that you don't get stuck with any crazy workout.”

Strömsholm also emphasizes persistence.

If you continue working out regularly for a couple of months, it can already become a routine for you.

“The most important thing is to find a sport that you can slip into your everyday life without noticing.”

For new ones for the trainers, Kärkkäinen, who has trained purposefully for 35 years, hopes for perseverance.

After the initial enthusiasm, it would be important to make training a part of your life.

“We should get to the point where working out becomes the same thing and at the same time meets a normal part of life like sleeping and eating.”

According to Kärkkäinen, you can get there by training regularly for six months. In that time, the body starts to get used to and enjoy working out.

“If training is short, you won't have time to get results and then the enthusiasm will end. In half a year, there is time for everyone to get good results, and of course that motivates to continue.”
