The Blood Transfusion Center of the Valencian Community, with the collaboration of the Department of Public Health of the Torrevieja City Council, holds today, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., its 20th edition of the Blood Donation Marathon, at the Casa de the elderly on San Pascual Street. This solidarity day, which began to be celebrated in 2004, in which Torrevieja, according to the City Council, “is one of the most generous cities due to the large number of donors it has.”
In these twenty editions, according to data provided by the transfusion center, a total of 2,707 donations have been made, of which 605 have been from donors who were making this very supportive gesture for the first time. “This year alone it is worth noting that a total of 1,040 blood donations have been made in our city,” stressed the Councilor for Health and doctor at the Quirón hospital, Rosa Cañón.
250 daily
Throughout the province, explains the head of service of the Transfusion Center of the Valencian Community in Alicante, Mabel Ortiz de Salazar, about 250 daily donations are needed to meet the needs of their patients and thus cover, among others, oncological treatments, interventions surgeries, births, accidents, etc.
The requirements to donate blood are few. To start, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, be in good health, weigh more than 50 kilos and it is important not to go on an empty stomach. The head of the service reminds that for any questions or more information you can consult the website http://centro-transfusion.san.gva.es. Additionally, all the daily donation points appear there. “Blood from all groups is needed,” emphasizes Ortiz de Salazar, who calls for the solidarity of the neighbors.
