The Spanish women’s handball team beat Kazakhstan this Wednesday (34-17) in the first match of the World Cup being played in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, a comfortable victory to create foundations and leave behind the nerves of the debut.
The Warriors went from less to more and ended up beating, as could be expected, an inferior rival on paper in Group G. The Kazakh team surprised at the beginning with the outside shot and Spain got tangled up in inaccuracies looking for its place in defense. Ambros Martín’s players began to get going after 10 minutes and in the final stretch of the first half they found the goals that they resisted at times.
María Prieto, Maitane Echeverria, Alicia Fernández and Paulina Pérez carried the offensive weight in that first act, with many rotations in the Guerreras. The Canarian coach, in his debut in a major tournament, measured his efforts and put all his players in competition with the changes.
After the good work of Kaba Gassama and Lysa Tchaptchet, Spain returned with more goals in the second half, with good work from Sole López and Maitane, but above all they adjusted in defense. The change in goal also worked with Merche Castellanos, author of some saves that gave rhythm to the Spanish team on the counterattack. The Warriors left the victory on track early and with authority, with many minutes ahead to grow and test.
Spain will face Ukraine on Friday (8:30 p.m., Tdp) and Brazil on Sunday. The World Cup champion goes to the Games, and the second to seventh places have a secure place in the pre-Olympic Games.
