With the large victory at political elections in the Netherlands by Geert Wildersthe leader and founder of the Party for Freedoms, the nightmare ‘Nexit’ arrives in Brussels, the possible exit of the Netherlands from the European Union. The EU, however, does not want to believe this possibility despite the fact that the far-right party Partij voor de Vrijheid has in its program that of submitting the idea of a ‘Nexit’ to a referendum and today Wilders himself has not ruled it out even if he has not announced it among his priorities.
“We never comment on national election results. The Netherlands – explained the chief spokesperson of the European Commission Eric Mamer, commenting on the results of yesterday’s legislative elections in the Netherlands – is a founding member of the EU, a very strong member of the Union Elections take place at regular intervals in the Member States, this in itself it does not question in any way the permanence of any country in the EU. We continue to count on the strong participation of the Netherlands in the European Union, of course.”
Despite the 37 seats obtained by Wilders, the leader of the far-right party will have to make alliances if he wants to govern the country and the negotiations promise to be long. “Much will depend on what the third and fourth parties want to do in order of results obtained, respectively the liberals of the Freedom Party, led by Yeşilgöz-Zegerius (25 seats, 10 less than in the 2021 elections, ed.) and Pieter Omtzigt’s New Social Contract (founded in August and won 20 seats, ed.): if Wilders wants to govern he will have to try to convince them, he will have to understand what they want to do”, because to reach the majority of 76 seats he needs their support , Maarten Van Aaldaren, correspondent in Italy for the Dutch newspaper ‘De Telegraaf, explained to Adnkronos.
The Green Labor party GroenLinks-Pvda of former EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans, who won second place with 25 seats, has meanwhile completely ruled out the possibility of a coalition with the leader of the PVV: “Governing with a party that excludes for us is out of the question.”
But to find an agreement with Wilders the other Dutch parties will have to come to terms with a particularly extreme program. Yesterday, commenting on his victory, the far-right leader underlined the need to “regain control of the country”: “The tsunami of political asylum must be stopped, people must have more money in their wallets”.
One thing is certain, a Wilders prime minister could also have repercussions at a European level: in addition to his anti-immigration policy, he opposes the delivery of weapons to Ukraine and in his party’s program he is hostile to climate policy and continues to talk about a possible referendum for a ‘Nexit’. “I’m fed up with the way things have gone in recent years. We want a stricter asylum policy”, he explained today speaking to journalists. The far-right leader does not rule out proposing a referendum to understand whether the Netherlands will have to leave the EU or not, “but the first thing is a significant restriction on asylum and immigration”, Wilders said.
