The woman at the top of Hamas killed by Israel. Jamila al-Shanti, 68, was the widow of Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi. Today she died in the raids carried out by Israel on the Gaza Strip. Jamila al-Shanti, born in 1955, was the founder of the Hamas women’s movement. Her husband was killed in April 2004 in an Israeli raid.
The woman, who had completed her studies with a doctorate in English at university, was a university teacher in Gaza before starting her career with Hamas, with which in 2006 she was elected as a deputy in the Palestinian Legislative Council. In 2021 she became the first woman elected to the top of Hamas, in the movement’s decision-making body.
Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, a former pediatrician, was killed when he was 56 years old and had led Hamas for just 25 days, after taking up the legacy of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin who was killed on March 23 of the same year. Both died in raids conducted by Israeli armed forces helicopters. Rantissi, who described himself as a political activist, was held responsible for organizing a series of attacks and bombings that resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties.
