Last December, the FIA updated the Sporting Code, allowing the expression of political, religious or personal opinions during race weekends only with prior authorisation. A real censorship that hides behind the assumption that sport and politics must be separated: a position that is also respectable, if only President Mohammed Ben Sulayem didn’t contradict her every time she writes a tweet in favor of this or that actor, hoping to annoy Formula 1 in its power war against Liberty Media.
The federal president is not making many friends, neither among the leaders of the Circus nor at the level of public opinion (sexist and unacceptable comments about women are the latest scandal) and not even among the pilots. Without bothering Lewis Hamilton, who has already spent with Ben Sulayem dating back to last year, also Valtteri bottas – a pilot who usually keeps to himself – expressed his opposition to the federal gag.
“I don’t understand why they want to control us. I think that we should have the right to talk about what we want. That’s how I see it, but we’ll see what happens“, the Alfa Romeo driver told reporters on the occasion of the Race of Champions. “Personally, I don’t like politics, I like doing what I love, which is running, but at the same time, politics is part of today’s society. I think Formula 1 has done a good job of drawing attention to some of these issues and many drivers have raised their voices including Sebastian Vettel“.
