When the traffic lights went out, Beitske Visser took the lead, overtaking the polesitter Marta Garcia, while further back Jamie Chadwick recovered two positions after starting from eighth place on the grid.
Alice Powell then managed to move up to second position passing Marta Garcia on the fifth lap in turn 18 and went after the Visser putting pressure on the Dutch driver without being able to mislead the Sirin Racing rider.
Powell therefore had to settle for the second step of the podium in front of Marta Garcia, while the Chadwick race ended on lap 12 when the Englishman, after trying to overtake Jessica Hawkins for the fifth position, went to impact against barriers when cornering 7.
Her retirement means the title battle will continue into the next round at the Circuit of the Americas, with Visser narrowing the gap in the standings while Alice Powell is now third.
Visser took the lead at the start and was able to build a comfortable gap over both Garcia and Powell fighting behind her.
Further back, W Series Academy driver Juju Noda retired on the first lap after a contact with Nerea Marti in which she damaged the right front wheel of her car.
On lap three, Visser was 1.2 seconds ahead, while Racing X driver Abbi Pulling managed to overtake Fabienne Wohlwend to climb to seventh place.
After Powell moved up to second on lap five, Belen Garcia closed the gap on Marta Garcia, while Chadwick got stuck behind Hawkins in sixth.
A mistake by Chadwick on lap six almost allowed Pulling to pass, but the Jenner Racing rider managed to hold the position.
By lap eight, Powell had reduced the gap from Visser to less than half a second, but the tight road circuit made it difficult for her to find an overtaking opportunity.
Click2Drive driver Bristol Street Motors attempted a move into turn 7 on lap nine but was forced to stay behind Visser as Abbie Pulling pressed Chadwick further back.
The accident of the Jenner Racing driver on lap 12 forced the race direction to put the safety car on the track, thwarting the British’s chances of winning her third consecutive title this weekend.
The safety car went into action with just one lap to go and when operations resumed the Powell was unable to overtake the Visser.
Belen Garcia took fourth place ahead of Hawkins and Pulling, while Sarah Moore, Wohlwend, Emma Kimilainen and Abbie Eaton completed the top 10.
The W-Series will move to the United States for its next round in three weeks, before the season finale in Mexico the following weekend.
