A monolith with the name of the surgeon appears from this Monday in the La Arrixaca building in recognition of his professional and personal career
There are people who leave their mark and Dr. Pascual Parrilla is one of them. The prestigious surgeon – promoter of the liver transplant program that has placed the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital among the Spanish surgical elite – not only marked a before and after in the development of regional healthcare. He was also able to reach the heart of Murcian society through the patients who have put themselves in his hands.
“Professor Parrilla, who arrived in Murcia in 1975 as the youngest professor in the country, has been able to raise, with hard work and intelligence rarely seen, the level of medicine in a small community to levels of world leadership”, Pablo Ramírez, scientific director of the Murcian Institute of Biosanitary Research (IMIB) highlighted about his “teacher”. A leading center that follows in the footsteps of his director and that has been named after him since Monday: IMIB Pascual Parrilla.
“He launched an ambitious, almost titanic project to make a center of excellence in research,” Ramírez stressed about “the Spanish surgeon with the greatest scientific prominence at the present time.” He also quoted some statements by Pascual Parrilla to convey the philosophy that has taken him to the top. «If something characterizes the school of surgeons that I have trained in Murcia, it is that they have all learned to have a special relationship with patients because they have all seen me do it. I always say it. Do not go to see a patient in his room without knowing his name. And when you come in, call him by his name, sit next to him, hold his hand and ask him how he’s feeling.”
Humanization of healthcare
The President of the regional Executive, Fernando López Miras, also focused on the human quality of Pascual Parrilla and his leadership. “Virtue without a heart is useless, virtue without passion is inconsequential and virtue without a soul does not help anyone,” he said during his speech at the event in which the Community recognized the career of the “best surgeon who has passed through this hospital and the best researcher who passed through the Region». «Professor Parrilla humanized healthcare. He was concerned that generations of doctors cared for people, not just patients. That he did and it is the best legacy he has left us ».
The event, which had a small audience and in which a plaque with the new name of the IMIB was unveiled, was attended by a large part of Pascual Parrilla’s family and his colleagues. His son Guillermo, who is also a doctor at La Arrixaca, thanked the visibly moved recognition: “It is very important to him after a lifetime of work for patients.”
