The bad accident suffered by Joan Mir in the initial stages of the Red Bull Ring Austrian Grand Prix, he will force the 2020 world champion of the MotoGP class to two weeks of rest, having suffered from talus-calcaneal-navicular ligament injuries with grade I – II instability. Suzuki thus entered into the perspective of looking for a rider for the next race at Misano and it is no mystery that an offer was made in recent days to Danilo Petruccicurrently engaged in MotoAmerica with Ducati, which however declined the offer preferring to devote all his energies to the championship he is facing, which sees him fighting with Gagne with two races to go.
The Japanese team therefore chose to put the 31 year old on Mir’s bike Kazuki Watanabe, which with the brand from Hamamatsu is part of the SERT (Suzuki Endurance) team as a reserve and raced with the team that finished on the podium at the recent Suzuka 8 Hours. The experienced Japanese driver is also part of the All Japan Road Race championship, where he is third in the standings. “First of all I want to wish Joan a speedy recovery, he is a great rider to see and I hope he can be on track soon”, Watanabe explained, who then added: “I was really pleased to receive the call to replace him at Misano. It will be nice to try a MotoGP on that track. the I will try to do my best and to show something to the team that gave me this opportunity ”. Livio Suppo, Suzuki team manager, motivated the choice as follows: “We are really sorry that Mir will not be able to race at Misano and we wish him a speedy recovery. We are delighted to welcome Kazuki Watanabe to our team. He has a lot of experience with Suzuki, and is having a good season in the All Japan series and finished third at the Suzuka 8 Hours just a few weeks ago. The GSX-RR will be a very different challenge, but we will do our best for him to get the most out of this experience ”.
