“Minions: a villain is born”, the animated film of Universal Studios, has been a victim of censorship in China just like “Fantastic Animals”. The Asian country, in order to avoid undesirable messages for its nation, decided to change nothing less than the end of the film and give the character of Gru and his accomplice Wild Knuckles.
It is a modification that, in addition to attracting attention for being an animated film, also completely alters the tone of comedy by which this saga has always been characterized.
the original ending
In the original denouement of “Minions: A Villain Is Born” (also called “Minions: Rise of Gru” in other countries), Willy Kobra (Alan Arkin) – the organizer of the main robbery in the film – fakes his death and flees from the police with Gru (Steve Carell).
Apparently, the authorities would have considered this ending as not exemplary for the inhabitants of their country, especially for minors, who are the target audience for this film.
How does “Minions: A Villain Is Born” end in China?
In China, the ending is completely different. To begin with, the conclusion of the story is not shown on video, but is instead told in writing on a banner, as an alternate ending animation was never made for that country.
Thus, we are first told that Willy Kobra was caught by the police and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Later, it is revealed that Gru returned home to his family and that “his greatest achievement is being the father of three girls.”
And that’s how the film ends, with an ending that the Chinese government has considered appropriate and that leaves aside what Kyle Balda, Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val (directors) had written.
