Today, Friday, the United States welcomed the efforts made by Lebanon and Israel to reach a decision on the demarcation of their maritime borders.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement that the administration of US President Joe Biden believes that reaching an agreement can lead to “greater stability, security, and prosperity for Lebanon and Israel, as well as the region, and believes that a solution is possible.”
Lebanon and Israel are engaged in US-brokered negotiations to delineate the common maritime border that would help determine the oil and gas resources that each possesses.
The dispute over the border separating the two countries hindered the exploration of energy sources in areas in the eastern Mediterranean and led to an increase in the risks of an escalation of tension between them.
An American mediator met Israeli negotiators last month after Lebanon submitted a proposal.
On Friday, Price said, “Progress towards a solution can only be made through negotiations between the two parties.”
