Suurpetokeskus has until the end of August to fix the problems. After that, the Regional Administrative Agency of Northern Finland decides on the possible cancellation of the zoo permit.
Kuusamo The zoo permit of the large-animal center will not be canceled at least during the current summer, according to the Regional Administration Office of Northern Finland (avi).
Avi said in a press release on Tuesday that the welfare of the center’s animals is no longer in “immediate danger”. However, the agency requires that the deficiencies it finds be corrected by the end of August.
Still in June avi announced, that it was considering immediately revoking the large carnivore center’s zoo permit. Serious flaws in the center’s operations had been discovered during an inspection in the spring, and the problems also became public in May.
June During the inspection visit on the 29th, the inspector stated that improvements had been made to ensure the welfare of the animals. The Aina bear had been moved to practical conditions, the fences of the shelters had been repaired and stimulation had been added.
However, there are still problems with the operation, says avi.
According to the agency, the Kuusamo Large Carnivore Center must “arrange an appropriate health check by a veterinarian for the animals in the shelter, obtain treatment for sick animals, prevent closely related animals from breeding with each other, and demonstrate that it participates in the exchange of information regarding the protection of species in an adequate manner”.
The agency will make its final decision on the possible cancellation of the zoo permit when the deadline set for the end of August has passed.
The big predator center there is also an ongoing police investigation into the activity. The Oulu police started a preliminary investigation in June at the request of the regional administrative agency.
