After Tim van Rijthoven, Tallon Groet has also qualified for the second round of Wimbledon. The Dutchman can now take on Carlos Alcaraz. Fabio Fogini was defeated in four sets: 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Greek track started its second time at the Wimbledon main tournament. Last year he failed to stunt in the first round against Alexander Zverev. Now it was the task of Greek track, itself number 53 in the ATP ranking, to eliminate an Italian who was ten places lower in that ranking (63) with Fognini. Something he already did at the Australian Open and something Botic van de Zandschulp already did at Roland Garros.
The first two sets were not very spectacular. Until 5-5, both men managed to keep their service in both the first and second set. In the end, the first set went to the Italian and the second to the Dutchman, who had a false start in the third set. He was immediately broken, but recovered himself excellently by immediately taking the two service turns from Fognini. That third set went to Greek track 6-3.
In the fourth set, the Italian’s grumbling started to increase, but Greek track also reported to the umpire more than once. The track was slippery and as time went on it logically got darker too. Greek track, however, coped best with those circumstances and defeated Fognini, who was eliminated again by a Dutch opponent, by also winning the fourth set: 6-4.
With this, Greek track qualifies for the second round of Wimbledon for the first time. Now awaits Alcaraz, the number seven in the ATP ranking. The Spanish goldcrest won difficult after five sets against Jan-Lennard Struff.
