Hangar 13the studio behind Mafia IIIis facing another round of layoffs.
As reported by Kotaku, the developers of the three offices of the studio were fired. The layoffs particularly affected the Novato, California office: almost 50 developers lost their jobs here alone, drastically reducing the size of the office’s staff, which previously had only 87 employees.
“I know it sucks,” he said Nick Baynes, head of the Brighton, UK office, to Novato employees, Kotaku reported. “I’m sorry I’m not there to deliver this message. I’ll come soon. I know you need a local guide and facility and we are working on it“.
This isn’t the first time Hangar 13 has laid off large numbers of employees – the studio laid off a significant number of employees in both 2017 and 2018. The studio was also drastically affected by the cancellation of Take-Two’s Volt project, which it was abandoned despite a $ 53 million investment and left about 200 developers without a project.
According to Kotaku, Baynes said the plan calls for the remaining developers in Hangar 13 to focus on the Mafia prequel and Project Hammer, another project currently in the works.
The founder and head of the studio, Haden Blackmanhe resigned this month, and this coincided with a series of other voluntary departures along with layoffs.
2K sent Kotaku the following statement:
“2K is fully committed to the future of Hangar 13, as the studio is going through a challenging but ultimately promising transition period. As part of our ongoing assessments to ensure that our resources are aligned with our goals, we have made some changes that have resulted in fewer positions and separation from some colleagues. These decisions are always difficult. We are doing everything we can to work with affected employees to find them new roles in other 2K projects and teams, and we are providing full support to those who cannot be relocated by connecting them with industry networks and resources to find new opportunities. outside of 2K“.
