Tatum show for the Celtics – bankruptcies for German NHL stars
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
Basketball: Bucks win top game – Tatum towers for Celtic
Defending champions Milwaukee Bucks also won against the Phoenix Suns in the NBA top game and gave the currently best team in the league their only 13th loss of the season. For the champions it was the fourth win in a row and the third against another top team from the best basketball league in the world. The Bucks had already won against the Miami Heat on Wednesday and the Chicago Bulls on Friday and also caught up a deficit in each case.
With his season best of 44 points, Khris Middleton was the most successful thrower on the field with 132:122 on Sunday (local time) and also clearly overshadowed Giannis Antetokounmpo with his 19 points. It was the first time the Suns had played in Milwaukee since losing the final series for the title last season. However, the Suns continued to be without their stars Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Paul has a broken thumb, Booker is on the league’s corona list. The Bucks climbed to third place in the Eastern Conference with the win and are fast becoming a contender for a title defense.
Like Tatum and Middleton, Nikola Jokic had a strong evening. Last season’s MVP made a triple double for the Denver Nuggets at 138-130 after overtime against the New Orleans Pelicans. From a total of 46 points, twelve rebounds and four assists, the Serb recorded 30 points after the third quarter alone. A combination of a triple double with at least 40 points and four blocks was the last thing LeBron James did in the NBA – twelve years ago.
The Memphis Grizzlies surprisingly lost 112:123 to the Houston Rockets, who for the third time had to do without national team player Dennis Schröder, who had an ankle injury. Kristaps Porzingis led his new team to a 133-123 win over the Indiana Pacers in his first game for the Washington Wizards, keeping hopes alive of qualifying for the playoffs.
Basketball: Houston wins without Schroeder
Without the still injured national basketball player Dennis Schröder, the Houston Rockets have ended their series of defeats in the North American professional league NBA. The Texans won 123-112 against the Memphis Grizzlies. Despite the first win after the last twelve bankruptcies in a row, the Rockets remain last in the Western Conference. Schröder was absent for the third time in a row after suffering an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Hartenstein and the Los Angeles Clippers ended a run of five consecutive wins. The Californians lost 93-116 to the New York Knicks, with Hartenstein scoring 14 points. In the battle for the playoffs, the Clippers are eighth in the West.
Ice hockey: bankruptcies for German NHL stars
The German NHL professionals all suffered defeats with their teams on Sunday. Tim Stützle lost with the Ottawa Senators at the Vegas Golden Knights by conceding a goal seconds before the end 1:2, his 18th assist this season was therefore only of statistical value. Nico Sturm also missed his ninth goal of the season because the Minnesota Wild lost 6-3 at home to the Dallas Stars. National ice hockey goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer had to admit defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes with the Seattle Kraken 2:3.
Only former national coach Marco Sturm was able to celebrate: As assistant coach of the Los Angeles Kings, there was a 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabers.
