Six Emirati universities were ranked among the top 150 universities in Asia, according to the Times Higher Education Foundation’s ranking of Asian universities for the year 2024, topped by Khalifa University of Science and Technology, which ranked 40th, while the UAE University ranked 58th, Abu Dhabi University ranked 89th, and the University of Sharjah. It ranked 96th, while Zayed University came in 114th place, in addition to the American University of Sharjah, which ranked 148th.
The Times Higher Education Asia Rankings use the same performance indicators as the World University Rankings, but have been recalibrated to reflect the characteristics of institutions in Asia. Universities are judged across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available. The 2024 edition of the classification provides important updates to the original methodology, adopting a comprehensive assessment of universities active in research fields across five basic axes: teaching, research environment, research quality, global perception, and industry.
Khalifa University advanced five places in the ranking of Asian universities for the year 2024 compared to last year’s evaluation, as it moved from 45th to 40th place, and Zayed University also advanced from 124th to 114th place, while the American University of Sharjah advanced from 201st to 148th place, while the University of The UAE fell from 40th to 58th place, Abu Dhabi University from 59th to 89th place, and the University of Sharjah also fell from 45th to 96th place.
The classification included 739 universities from 31 countries, with Japan being the most represented country with 119 universities, followed by India with 91 higher education institutions.
98 universities have joined the rankings since last year, with Tsinghua University and Peking University in China taking first and second places for the fifth year in a row. Chinese universities also occupied the largest number of positions in the list of the top 100 universities with 33 universities, followed by South Korea with 16 universities.
Khalifa University, in its comment on the latest classification by “Times”, said that it jumped from sixth place last year at the level of Arab universities in the Asian classification to come in second place in the same classification this year, stressing that it continues to maintain its advanced position with regard to providing an environmentally friendly environment. Unparalleled research at the state level, and it embraces three colleges, including the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the College of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. The university indicated that, in addition to the Virtual Research Institute “Aspire”, it includes a group of 12 major research centers specialized in various fields, and contributes to strengthening partnerships and innovations in many diverse specializations.
For his part, Director of the American University of Sharjah, Dr. Todd Laursen, confirmed that the latest classification of the “Times Higher Education” Foundation for Asian Universities 2024 reflects the university’s commitment to providing a prestigious educational experience and developing various research. He said: “The new classification comes at a time when the American University of Sharjah continues to strategically invest in developing faculty members, promoting a culture of research excellence, enhancing student support services, and enhancing international cooperation, as these initiatives have contributed to raising the quality of education and research at the university. And enhance its reputation as a leading higher education institution in the region.”
Top 10 Asian universities
Five Chinese universities are in the top 10 on the list of the best Asian universities for 2024, compared to four universities last year.
The top 10 universities were ranked as follows: in first place is Tsinghua University of China, in second place is Peking University of China, in third place is the National University of Singapore, in fourth place is Nanyang Technological University from Singapore, and in fifth place is the University of Tokyo, Japan. The University of Hong Kong came in sixth place, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in seventh place, Fudan University of China in eighth place, Zhejiang University of China in ninth place, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong in tenth place.
