5G Smart School is a Qualcomm Incorporated program which, through its Wireless Reach Initiative and in collaboration with WeSchool, TIM and Acer, provides schools with next-generation wireless technology solutions. The programme, launched at an event in Rome, aims to enhance the learning experience so that teachers and students can benefit from digital tools, content and experiences. 5G Smart School enhances teaching and learning in secondary schools (students aged 11-19) across Italy using wireless technologies, 5G connectivity, access to an online learning platform, training on innovative digital teaching methodologies and ongoing support to teachers. Marco De Rossi, CEO WeSchool, says: “5G Smart School demonstrates that technology in education is not only a tool to improve individual work. Technology, connectivity and innovative methodologies can also improve in-person collaboration, imagining a new school model for the future.”
According to data from the World Economic Forum, in 2022 over 60% of world GDP should depend on digital technologies. However, 37% of the world’s population, nearly 3 billion people, remain offline, and many more have access only to unreliable internet connections. Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm Europe, Inc. and President of Qualcomm Europe/MEA, said: “Qualcomm is a leader in advanced technologies and solutions that are essential to bridging the digital divide, including wireless connectivity and high performance and low consumption. We believe that access to advanced digital tools in schools is so important for the educational growth of students. The 5G Smart School program is an example of our efforts within the Italian school system and schools, in throughout Europe and in the world, to reduce the gap”.
The program aims to accelerate the development of digital skills among Italian secondary school students, starting with nearly 2,000 students and 100 teachers in eight schools. Teachers and students are provided with advanced digital tools, such as Snapdragon 5G platform-enabled Acer notebooks for teachers and Wi-Fi models for students. The devices are connected to TIM’s 5G network. These “always on, always connected” personal computers allow teachers to connect to the Internet and plan lessons virtually anywhere. Daniele Franceschini, Head of Technology and IT Planning, Engineering & Innovation at TIM declares: “Our commitment has always been to guarantee quality connectivity services and accelerate the digital transformation in Italy. We have joined this project because we believe it is in line with what we are doing in every sphere, public and private. 5G FWA and 5G mmWave technologies are a further tool to keep our Italian schools in step with innovation”. The event saw the participation of speakers, including the Italian Ministry of Education, the Italian Parliament, the Commission European Union and UNESCO, which highlighted the current challenges of the education system, technological improvements and a new model for the future.
